Curse of Atuk

Figured since I am talking about Hollywood curses I would mention another one, the Curse of Atuk. Atuk was a script for a movie based on an old novel from the 60's but where does the curse come in. It is said every actor who read the script has died. From wikipedia here is the story

Atuk is most famous for supposedly being cursed and, according to legend, responsible for the deaths of several major comedic actors in the 1980s and 1990s. The "Atuk Curse" has become one of the better known urban legends of Hollywood. Its first victim, supposedly, was John Belushi, who had read the script and was reportedly enthusiastic about taking on the role of Atuk. Shortly afterwards, he was found dead of a drug overdose in 1982.

After Belushi's death the part was offered to comedian Sam Kinison, who accepted it in 1988. Kinison filmed at least one scene for the film before he grew dissatisfied with the script and demanded parts of it be re-written, halting production. His leaving the film led the production company to file a lawsuit against him which was a large part in of making him destitute when it finally settled. Not long afterward, while talks were underway to continue the project, Kinison died in a car crash in 1992.

The curse supposedly struck again in 1994 when John Candy, who had been approached for the role of Atuk, was reading the script when he suddenly died of a heart attack, on March 4 (the day before the 12th anniversary of Belushi's death). It was around this point in the production's history that the press began to speak of a curse. Some believe the curse struck twice that year, since in November Michael O'Donoghue died of a cerebral hemorrhage. O'Donoghue was a writer and comedian who was also a friend of Belushi and Kinison and, the story goes, had read the script (in some versions even worked on it) before recommending it to them.

The most recent victim of the "Atuk Curse" is said to be Chris Farley, who idolized John Belushi. Like his idol, he was up for the role of Atuk, and was about to accept when, also like his idol, he died of a drug overdose in December 1997 at the age of 33 (the same age as Belushi). According to some versions the curse would strike once more, only six months later in May 1998 when Farley's friend and former Saturday Night Live cast-mate, Phil Hartman, was murdered by his wife. Farley is said to have shown the Atuk script to Hartman, before his death, and was encouraging him to take a co-starring role.

The "Atuk Curse" resembles another alleged curse on a film project: the long-attempted film adaptation of the 1980 novel A Confederacy of Dunces. Many of the same actors who were considered for the role of Atuk before their deaths - Belushi, Candy and Farley - were also considered for the lead role in A Confederacy of Dunces.

Curse, or very odd coincidence? How is it that everyone who read for the role dies? Can a curse be placed upon a script? No one knows for sure and no one plans on finding out as the script is now locked away never to be read again.

How it changed my life:

Good thing I was never considered for the role

Date: 7/23/2011 8:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34663    Yep, the cursed set, the cursed actors, all said to be from the fact that they used actual human remains in the part where the skeletons come up from the ground in their swimming pool, or what was going to be the swimming pool
Date: 7/23/2011 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 2734    I did not know that! Ugh! How does one get their hands on actual human remains let alone use them in a movie? And they were in the pool with the dead bodies...Ugh! UGH!
Date: 7/23/2011 9:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34663    human remains can be purchased from various places but it's not as it seems, people will donate their bodies to science from there what can be harvested will be, what can be used for science purposes will be and even some parts are sold, bones usually, you can't legally sell living tissue or organs they can only be donated and for transplants, but you can sell dead tissue and organs, in fact there are many people who collect human remains, skulls mainly, even the some collect other things in jars such as organs, don't know why, perhaps I should post about body part collecting sometimes
Date: 7/23/2011 9:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 2734    LOL Doughboy I am both impressed and a little frightened by your knowledge of "human remain attainment" practices. Ummm...made any lampshades out of human skin lately? Just kidding... or am I?
Date: 7/23/2011 10:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 64702    That's weird to hear. About the "Poltergeist"movie from what I've heard about 5 of the cast have died, beginning with the actress who played the oldest daughter was murdered by her boyfriend just a year after filming, the Native Amer.shaman-infection of the liver I think, the evil "reverend" "Cain"-stroke,the "pyschic medium"-cancer,and finally the one who played the origanal"Carol Anne"of intestinal infection. Oh in the first movie they were in the process of building a pool. Remember when "Mrs Freeling" got locked out by the spirits and she ran around the back yard screaming to get any of the neighbor's attention for help, she slipped and fell into the unfinished pool(it was raining and real muddy)while she was freaking out when the bodies started to pop out of the ground.
