how do you know when your childs truly ready to start school? (headstart for a 3 year old)~BY SHEELA

hello friends, i was kind of confused about putting my 3 year old in head start this year. my son turned 3 march 1st and he's eligable for head start this year. but a part of me isn't quite sure if he's ready. first of all, it's already started, but i was in oklahoma last week due to two untimely deaths in my family, so if i do send him,do i look like a careless tardy mother for enrolling him late? and he waits till the last minute to tell you he has to potty, and i dont really know if he'll be wanting someone to help pull his pants back up,or wipe his behind or something ya know, what happens then?,lol. i know the child has to be potty trained, and my son is, but he's not very big to complete those bathroom breaks without assistance. plus, he's never really interacted much with other children. i dont want him being selfish, which i dont think he will be, cause i've mainly seen him look reserved and careful around other kids, he watches them play and observes their actions ya know. the thing is, i was going to keep him home till next year when he's four and then i figured he'd be more than ready for pre school. but a friend of mine enrolled her little girl around his age, and the other day in the grocery store he was just like, "momma,i wanna go to school!" i was like is this a sign cause i was constantly wondering what to do about sending him or not? that totally made me think, theres a solution, for no apparent reason,he says this, so maybe he should go,since he chose to right? i'm running out of time cause he's a couple days late so advice is needed my friends, lol.i'm afraid if i was going to start him this year i should've already had it lined up and sent him the first day,but with 2 deaths in my family on the same weekend right before school started i had no choice but to drive 8 hours to oklahoma for the weekend for my family ya know. i hope i'm not portrayed as a irresponsible parent here,i'm just a confused single mom with only 1 child so bear with me,lol. thanks everyone for reading--- "sheela & jaycee joshua"

I didn't send my baby to school until, he was five he's a late bloomer ya know;) And, with my daughter she was four Early Bloomer lol. I don't regret spending the extra time with my son. The good thing about it I guess parents could argue is they get to learn earlier and get a head start on pk:)
Date: 8/21/2008 5:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    If he wants to go, let him. Explain about the family problems, no one will think you're bad for starting him late, these things can't be helped. As for potty time, most little ones need some help, the school should be prepared for this. Why not pop in and have a chat with the staff there.
Date: 8/21/2008 6:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 3901    Oh isn't he the cutest!! I think you should sit Jaycee down and talk to him about the potty issues, let him know that he has to let people know when he has to go and that it's okay to ask someone else for help. I don't think anyone will look at you bad for enrolling him late, there are many issues that arise and most don't need an explanation for late enrollment.
Date: 8/21/2008 6:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    He is so cute. I think you ought to give it a try if he says he wants to go. You should know soon enough if he isn't ready. As for help with the bathroom breaks, I would imagine many 3 year olds still need assistance and the staff know how to deal with things like that.
Date: 8/21/2008 6:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 57995    First of all you need to call them and ask them these questions. In the Head Start program in my area they told me they cannot refuse a child that is still in diapers. I was always told if you child was in diapers they couldn't go to school. Not true in my area, so maybe you need to ask about that. Second they encourage parents to stay and volunteer to help in the classroom. My daughter was in head start last year she was 3 and still in diapers. She was potty trained a few months later. Not long after she saw that her "best" friend was potty trained. She was in a home based program though. I drove her to the center every other Friday for playgroup and stayed there with her. One Thursday a month they went on a field trip. Her teacher came to our house once a week. She will be in the home based program again this year(unfortunately) because we live in the country and the bus will not come out here. I am disappointed that she cannot be there 4 days a week.

Date: 8/21/2008 2:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Keep him home another year with you. He is still young, and plenty of time to grow up. In Australia we have Playgroups. Playgroups are for children and parents. They are run by parents, and there is a different activity each week. The kids love it, and the parents get to talk about their kids. You learn so much from others, and form great friendships. The kids learn to interact also. Don't make the mistake of sending your son too early, and him having social problems as he gets older.
