Morbid Obese Rehab facilities

Hello all, I just watched a program on TV that was showing a nursing home/rehab center in Andover Ohio, that was primarily for the Morbid Obese. The facility puts its residence on a controled intake diet, that a doctor approves with daily rehabilitation exercise programs, with skilled nursing.

For the most part...,All that the morbidly obese people are being offered, to help them with, in their present condition is Bypass surgery! Why is that? Bypass surgery is not all that it is cracked up to be. Many times the patients of Bariatric surgery, often wind up worse off after their surgery than before. Sure they will lose the weight, but can still become bed ridden anyway. Some cannot even get bypass surgery, because a quicker death is certain. Because their health condition will cause them to die on the surgens table.

I think America needs more inpatient, rehabilitation nursing home facilitys, that are primarily geared for, and equipped to handle, and specialize with the Morbid Obese patients. Wouldn't It be better for the morbid obese patients to recieve help this way, than with the bariatric surgery proccess?

With an inpaitient weight loss plan, and skilled medical staff that can meet the needs of these patients all the way from hygene needs, to mental health conditions, these people I think could lose the weight, with support groups, exercise programs, physical thereopy to regain muscle strength, and proper dieting, while they loose and gain confidence of getting back a good funtioning life, in today's sociaty.

Is there any such places, other than the one in Andover Ohio? If not..., there should be. Don't you think?

Please express your thoughts on this subject and share your oppinions.

Halloween is Right around the corner.. .

Date: 8/19/2005 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think this is a good idea to help fix the issues that are already out there but i also th ink there should be more put in the schools and to parents about prevention.. becuase the old saying a a ounce of prevention saves a pound of cure i think that while teaching he 4 basic foodgroups they should also teach what happens if you eat healthy and get people back into the mindframe that chips and fast foods are treats and shouldnt be eaten every day.. though i will say(bleh i'm begining to rant on*L*) that it's not always diet that effects a person to become obese sometimes there are true medical issues that causes people to gain weight
Date: 8/19/2005 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 62146    a teacher at my school had quite an interesting and dare I say great! idea for controlling obesity over in america. At each all you can eat place you have the entrance way really narow with a sighn above it saying "if you can not fit through here you can not eat here" So people will start excerciseing more.

Date: 8/19/2005 5:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 63080    The problem with all of this and most other weight reduction things is that it works on the presumption that all that is the matter with these people is that they have no will power. Unfortunately that isn’t at all true so in the end all of these things are doomed to fail. Sure lock someone up and starve them and they will lose weight. Then let them go and watch them gain it back and then some. There are REASONS why some people are skinny and some are fat. There are genetic differences and physiological ones too that have to do with this. You can’t teach some one how to eat correctly, they are not stupid. They are fully aware of their problems and society never for an instant allows them to forget about it. You can’t say anything about anyone because of their race, creed, or national origin, You can go to jail for telling a racial joke, but everyone loves to put down people who do not fit TODAY’S perfect body image. It is for their own good after all…and makes us feel OH so superior. Do you really believe that someone who is dying slowly because of their weight is going to be motivated by further public humiliation such as that narrow passage into a buffet? Most insurance companies won’t even allow a doctor to TALK to you about a weight problem. For most morbidly obese people the ONLY hope that they have of EVER losing their weight and keeping it off is via the bypass surgeries. This works and the people that die during the surgery are unfortunate victims of a system that will not allow you help until it is almost too late. I have lost two friends from the surgery. They both were dying before the surgery and their hearts were unable to carry them through. They were dying anyway!! Both were over 500 lbs. If you have the surgery while you are in pretty good shape it really isn’t all that bad. The recovery is relatively rapid and the weight loss is rapid and usually permanent. The reason for this is that the surgery is in some ways correcting a problem. What in centuries past was a great survival trait today is a genetic time bomb. These people are hungry all the time! When there is food they eat prodigiously trying to feel that happy full feeling that normal people take for granted. In centuries past these were the people that survived the famines. The did so because while there was food, they ate and put it away in the form of fat. When the famine came they lived off their stored fuel. The oh so cute skinny person died! In the past what we consider pretty was the sign of poverty! Successful people were plump because they stored the fuel when it was available and their success made it often available while the poor didn’t. Fat people can and often are in as good as or better shape than anyone else. No they are not marathon runners but if they lead active busy lives and are physically active they can be in great shape in a cardio vascular sense. Unfortunately today very few are very active…even among kids. Inactivity mixed with the weight problem is a killer. Fat people are not fat because they are inactive, they would be inactive if they were skinny and would be fat if they were active. Someday they will find the chemistry that makes the obese person’s body store so efficiently and then burn it so slowly…but not until they quit trying to make it a personality defect and not until they decide that fat people are worth the effort to save. I have actually heard a Doctor’s wife say that her husband would refuse treatment to patients who were fattys if he could because he didn’t like wasting his time on people that don’t care about themselves. I wish he would say something like that around me! ~DanL~

Date: 8/19/2005 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    I watched a story about this on Dateline tonight. And all of the patients were successful in reaching there weight loss goals without surgery. So obviously these places work. I'm sure there are others, just do a google search.
Date: 8/20/2005 8:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    ReleaseMe- I saw that, too!! Actually, it was a really cool story- those kids looked pretty great when they were done. And they had better outlooks on life, it seemed. -Beags
Date: 8/21/2005 12:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 57232    so many think that gastric bypass is the answer and are afraid to work. I'm not meaning to offend anyone that has had it but I think so much of people who conquer this without surgery.
