There are several possible interpretations, philosphies, and ideas of what this song could mean. I was wondering what everyone though that the song might mean to them? Im trying to get as many opinions as possible on what everyone feels that the lyrics mean. I am interesting in hearing what everyone has to say on the subject :) enjoy!

Hotel California bye the Eagles On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell' Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine' He said,'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine' And still those voices are calling from far away, Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face They livin' it up at the Hotel California What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device' And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast The stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before 'Relax,'said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!

Date: 10/28/2002 12:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 20104    I never thought there was any hidden meaning to this song. I just thought it was a story about a guy and a hotel. What do you think it means???
Date: 10/28/2002 1:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 61894    To me, this song is about death, or the time just after dying. There are many parts in the song that could be seen as this, like: "this could be heaven, or this could be hell", "showed me the way", "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light".

So that is what i think.

Date: 10/28/2002 1:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 24856    I believe Hotel California is place we all go but don't want to be.....maybe death???
Date: 10/28/2002 1:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 61893    I think it has alot of hidden messages. Dealing with and fighting your OWN beast. Dealing with addiction "of all/any kind." Like this part in the song for example: 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device' We all have our lil beast/demon in the closet, and this song covers all aspects. The woman's beast could be being a hooker or something similar. Who knows.. maybe the hotel was a hooker joint..lol and they come there to hide from their troubles and some to help face their troubles. Then again it could be a mental hospital :-) Just my thoughts. ~babygurl-1~
Date: 10/28/2002 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 61912    I have read that the song contains back masking too.
Date: 10/28/2002 2:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 47618    I love this song and have always heard people say it was about addiction. One of the guys from the band said it was about America in general...but I'm one of those that get a "death" message from it as well.
Date: 10/28/2002 3:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 11777    Drugs and addiction and their consequences. Similar to "Life in the Fastlane" in my opinion. The real clincher in that song is the line 'Doctor says he's comin'---But you gotta pay him cash'....Definitely alludes to purchasing something to make things better.
Date: 10/28/2002 3:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 36538    I don't know why but it seems like I remember someone telling me that this song was about an asylum. I'm not sure how accurate that is or whatever.
Date: 10/28/2002 4:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 47618    You're right. Another theory is that the song was about a mental institution and the Hotel California was actually an assylum.
Date: 10/28/2002 6:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    I had heard the last theory about the asylum as well as the drug addiction theory. I tend to lean toward the mental asylum myself.
Date: 10/28/2002 6:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 56200    I remember hearing that is was about drugs. I've always liked the song. Snipit
Date: 10/28/2002 8:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 56489    I believe it's about an asylum, & their probably all there due to drugs, LOL. Aimless
Date: 10/29/2002 12:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 55689    hmm theses are intresting.. I never thought of any of them
Date: 10/29/2002 7:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 28890    The song is cool
Date: 10/29/2002 8:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 8726    Thanks for your opinions everyone I have heard so many theories on this. I wanted to see what theories everyone else had heard or what everyone could come up with thanks
Date: 10/29/2002 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    Don't laugh, I always thought the Hotel california song had something to do with the original movie the 'Shining' by Steven King. I just don't remember why. I would also like to know what the meaning is behind the words.
Date: 10/29/2002 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 56971    this is one of the greteset songs vere writen. like u said it has many meanings.
Date: 10/29/2002 12:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 38726    hMM< THIS IS INTERESTING....I always thought it was about addiction of heroin."Hotel California"..meaning the opium trade in the west " Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before "....meaning, He can never reach the original, first euphoric high....."'Relax,'said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!"....meaning, you may possibly kick the habit, but you will always be an addict.....I don't know but its a popular theory.

Date: 10/29/2002 1:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 8090    It reminds me of an insane asylum....or maybe a menatally ill person's mind. I have always liked this song...
Date: 10/29/2002 1:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 8090    mentally ill....lol...can't spell today
Date: 10/30/2002 1:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 8726    PamyJo, Im not gonna laugh. its an interesting theory
Date: 10/30/2002 6:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 24813    I've never actually heard the song before, but reading the lyrics now, (and assuming it was written with intended depth?) it seems to be a symbolic description that we are all initially free, with the potential to do good, but are corrupted by life, by the people and the society with which we are forced to partake until death by inevitability or choice... a statement on modern culture more or less.
