Teen Rebellion- Is it REALLY Worse Now, Or Just More Intense? MissC.

Now this kind of struck me today as I was walking through the grocery store. I saw this one girl with green hair, fishnet stockings, a cut up shirt, and a skirt that BARELY covered her "No No Zone". Now the icing on the cake, (And I do MEAN Icing cause it was just as thick) was the three inches of makeup she had on her face. Looked like someone had punched both of her eyes she had on SO much eyeliner, and the guy she was with... I just won't go there... *Shudders*

Now, here is my question, back in the day... The 80's (I remember rebellion back then) it wasn't THIS bad. Sure, my cousin who got into a LOT of trouble rebelled, but she would not EVER dream of going out in public looking like THAT.

When I went through my teens in the 90's, I wore ripped jeans, and Led Zepplin Tee's, and leather chokers. BUT, I NEVER wore make up like that.

When my SISTERS went through it, they wore skimpy clothes, but at LKEAST they had their "No No Zones" WELL covered up. (Skirts were NEVER more than 4 inches above the knee).

So, I don't get it??? Is it REALLY worse, or is it just more Intense??? Will it fade this time??? I have seen people who are DEFINATELY WAY TOO OLD to be going through teen rebellion dressed this way too.

Now, PLEASE don't get me wrong here, Whe I was younger (I AM only 24) I was considered a Goth. But to me Gothic was not a FAD, it was a lifestyle. A TASTEFULL lifestyle. I only wore black (Still do most of the time) I was very quiet, practiced my own beliefes in the privacy of my own space in which NO ONE was allowed. And I wore pale make up. BUT COME ON! Is it JUST me??? Or do others think people are going a bit far with this???

Date: 10/14/2002 8:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I never really rebelled against my parents ever. I see no point in it at all. I went through my teens in the 90's too. Unless you consider rebelling when I was 4 my mom tried to make me wear dresses but I always wore jeans, long sleeved shirts, and boots.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    No, I can understand that, I just wanna know why someone would dress like the girl I saw today... I mean it was utterly tasteless.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 42515    People are gonna dress however they want regardless of what other people say or think.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    I think it gets worse and worse. It wasn't even until the 50's that the word teenager became commonly used..I think before that, "teenagers" were treated as adults, expected to pull there own weight. As the middle class grew, we were allowed to treat teenagers as children for a longer period of time..now it seems young adults are rebelling well into there 20's.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Also, parents allow there children to dress this way..I've been going through a struggle with my 13 year old over the age old question, should the belly be exposed or not exposed...NOT exposed has won the day because every shirt she owns that can be hiked up has been taken away from her.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    Kelly, THAT is what I call GREAT parenting. Why would someone allow thier Child to go out into public dressed that way??? And SP I know that people will dress no matter what people say or think, but would you really want to be lumped into a category where people just assume you are trash??? And although I try not to judge a book by its' cover, it really can't helped if you carry yourself in a manner which is so... tasteless.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    BTW SP I don't MEAN YOU personally, I am just saying "You" in general terms.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 16538    I personally think the rising percent of single parents contributes allot to this. I think it’s just immature for someone to act like this. People just need to start treating older people with respect and respect authority and quit acting like that.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    WELLLLLLL, I have to admit that I question athority whenever it is neccesary. But not out of turn. HOWEVER I have noticed that there has been a LOT of disrespect for athority and that is juat a completely different thing. As for the single parents... Sorry Big Tex, but I know a lot of single parents with teenagers who sdo not act this way...
Date: 10/14/2002 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Miss C, the threat of being force into wearing straight-leg jeans that rise well above her waste go along way to making her obey the no-belly exposed rule..As for single parenting, for all intents and purposes, I have been a single parent for the last 14 months, but that doesn't mean I will let my daughter dress like a tramp! It helps a lot that her school has gone to uniforms though...It is AMAZING what uniforms do for behaviour. Last year with NO dress code, the school had 175 infractions in the first two weeks. This year, also the first year for school uniforms, they had only 25 infractions in the first two weeks of school.
Date: 10/14/2002 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    if she wants to dress like that dont act like that i hate it when i go into public with black eyeliner chokers and such on and people turn there noses up
Date: 10/14/2002 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i do think it's more out there now and it is a bit stronger.... 10 years ago no one would have thought abotu school shootings but now it's known... not common but it's not a thing that doesn't happen... i think there are MANY reasons for this.. single parents.. parents using divorce too freely... the higher number of teenage mothers.. parents are far more relaxed... 20 years ago you would never hear of a teenager doing 5-6-7-8 even parternity tests on different men not knowing who the father was.. sex.. is less taboo and in the main stream more and more now and we have become a very very open culture... i'm not saying an open culture is a bad thing... it's great for freedom of expression.. but alas it's finding what i call "the happy medium" where there isn't too much and isn't too little life and our culture in general has to find the happy medium
Date: 10/14/2002 10:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    ok before i couldnt really reply but i follow the underground seen and dress it religously lol i love it but what people dont se is we're more respectful and talk more intelligently than "preps" why dont people get to know us before they say we're bad i mean think about it most adults see a kid in bondage pants spiked hair all black etc and they automatically think there bad kids and there kids that dress in name brand are angels I THINK NOT
Date: 10/15/2002 3:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 53507    ehh whats wrong with haning green hair?? and some people like to wear make-up like that it can look nice on some people its not being rebelious just being induvidual. id rather be like that (which i am) than just be like everyone else and look totally the same as everyone around me. and isnt it better them dressing like that than getting into trouble which there probably not but because of what they look like people will turn there noses up at them.
Date: 10/15/2002 4:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 53507    having*
Date: 10/15/2002 6:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 20104    I think it just gets worse and worse. There are a lot more things teens can get away with now compared to 20 years ago or even 5 years ago.
Date: 10/15/2002 11:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 9130    I think its worse.
Date: 10/15/2002 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 56927    Rebellion is an interesting topic. I think the reason for most teenage rebellion comes from the internal conflict they have with themselves. Alot of it comes from the opposition to western society, which is seen as bland. If it is worse, I think it is only because western culture is becoming more and more over powering myself. bob
Date: 10/15/2002 4:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 43608    Just let us do what we want,I hate how parents act this way -_-.I wanted to dye my hair,my parents were cool with that, until they found out I wanted it Green.I hate how parents have almost TOTAL control over their children until age 18,soem parents take it to far.

'Hey,Sarah, you can't wear that,It shows your legs,it shows your stomach,no you can't have your ears pierced,no you can't have different colored or spiked hair, come on Sarah you know we want you to be a geek with bad parents :)'

Date: 10/15/2002 5:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 57225    she was just expressing herself, it doesn't mean she's rebelling. maybe thats just how she wants to dress. i am a teenager and i don't think that you can say that EVERYTHING that teens do is rebeling. some teens realize that they are homosexuals...adults say its just a phase or jsut their way of rebeling. teens dress or act or think certain ways because they want to, but praents think they are just rebeling. its not always like that. TRUE, some teens DO do things just to rebel and go against their parents but its not a true statement to say that just because a teen is dressing in a way that seems weird to you that they are rebeling. but yes, her "no-no spots" as you called them should be covered up, just becuase its public decency. but that doesn't mean she's rebeling, she just has different ways of expressing herself
Date: 10/15/2002 7:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    I have no problem with kids expressing thier individuality, but can they at least keep thier clothes on???
Date: 10/15/2002 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    sasure is right why do parents put up a big fuss about your clothing and hair oh and piercings i mean my dads like "you dont only represent yourself but you represent your family and upbringing" yet hes always telling me not to judge a book by its cover can you say HYPOCRIT
Date: 10/16/2002 4:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 58923    Well... first of all, I think a lot of the hair dying etc, is simply for attention (not ALWAYS, but a lot of times!). Notice, those teens who don't like to bring attention to themselves, don't usually dye their hair bright pink, only those who like being in the spotlight. When you get to the make-up, the whole eye make-up thing is kind of a fad going on right now. What's wrong with fishnet stockings though? I love those! I need to buy a pair....
Date: 10/16/2002 5:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    58923 Nothing wrong with them, EXCEPT when they reveal those "No No Zones"
Date: 10/16/2002 10:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 8629    I think teen rebellion growing out the same way the generations do... In the 30's and 40's, being rebellous meant showing your knee... Now it's showing your "no-no-zone." It proportionate...
Date: 10/16/2002 10:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 8629    And might I say that "tasteless" is all relative.. This girl finds it appealing. I wouldn't, you don't, but she wouldn't be caught dead in your clothes or makeup, either. Being goth doesn't neccessarily mean you have a TASTEFUL lifestyle.. The majority of my friends are goth, not in a FADlike fashion, but goth.. and I know they have no taste... But I still love them and THEY ARE STILL PEOPLE UNDERNEATH all the layers of black clothing, under the white and pink makeup, beneath the leather boots and dungeons and dragons and all else that people stereotype them for, they are PEOPLE. Just like this "tasteless" girl you ran into...
Date: 10/17/2002 4:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 53507    Goth aint tasteless
Date: 10/17/2002 3:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    I am sorry, I have tried to understand this "Fad" but it STILL escapes me... Please don't hold it against me, I did try. As far as Goth being untastefull is concerned, I was a Goth in Highschool and into my early twenties, BUT I never looked like that.
Date: 10/17/2002 5:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 53314    What it comes down to is this:Everyones perspective of tasteful is diffrent Your outfit may appeal to others or may not,its just how it works not everyone can be happy.I dress diffrent but I do so because its more compfrtable I dont see why or how people can walka round in thoose baggy pants..And I skate,If I wore baggy clothes Id be in trouble.
Date: 10/17/2002 6:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    sweetness are you saying its tasteful to walk around in abercrombie $200 shoes and tommy hilfiger jeans I THINK NOT that looks so tacky
Date: 10/18/2002 4:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 10146    Big Tex, Look whos talking! Signed Saddam.
Date: 10/19/2002 8:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 53507    its not a fad to some people
Date: 10/20/2002 3:12:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    I know M, I didn't think it was a Fad either
Date: 10/21/2002 1:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 8090    Well when I was a teenager...way back in the eighties....lol....I used to wear pretty provacative clothing myself, and my father used to throw quarters at me, insinuating that I dressed like a hooker....lol...The thong exposed by the pants thing really freaks me out for some reason....I guess maybe because the only woman who do the thong/pants thing around where I live, weigh over 200 pounds easily....GROSS!!!! :)
Date: 10/21/2002 1:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 8090    I mean women....plural...
Date: 10/21/2002 3:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    EEEWWW!~!!!!!!! DB That IS gross!
Date: 10/22/2002 5:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 58809    As a 16 year-old teenager, I can tell you that i rebel from time to time...though that is not reflected upon the way I wear my clothes(at least i hope it doesn't); its really just the attitude problem( As I'm sure most parents know). I dress the way i want to, keeping in mind(somewhere back there) that I am representing the family and my upbringing...to an extent...not forgettting who i really am just to please someone else, so i won't go overboard. Sure i wear the black clothes sometimes and the rock t-shirts and have the dyed red(not too bright) hair...but i don't wear make-up..i JUST
got my ears pierced(ow) and i really detest skimpy outfits. I'm just explaining how I am ..okay...so im not trying to insult anyone here or say that everyone is or should be like this..or anything like that. Also, whether or not the way i dress is tasteful varies from person to person. Some people may think its too rocker chick, too goth, cute, or something like that. Regarding the way us teenagers dress: WE CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE!! The way we dress expresses our individuality. I guess you can say the way i dress is along the lines of a "punk rocker", even though i don't take it the level that i would like (its not an EXREME level mind you) because i keep in mind as i said before, who i'm representing: Mostly me and who i am, but also my parents. I really try not to judge others like sometimes people judge me by the way i dress sometimes. I don't dress the way you want me to, i dress the way i want to without degrading myself. So i guess I'm saying that not all teenagers rebel through the way they dress...they are just representing who they are..whether its "good" or "bad" representation in peoples opinions. Still, I keep that in mind all of what i've said when i open my closet and decide what to wear... <-DevilsRoad->

Date: 10/22/2002 5:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 58809    ..sorry its so long! <-DevilsRoad->
Date: 11/13/2002 11:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 8629    Jestr... I never had a chance to reply to you... no, I do not think abercrombie and finch 200.00 shoes are tasteful... neither do I think 10.00 walmart shoes are tasteful... As I stated, "tasteless" is relative.. so is "taste".. Where you shop doesn't matter to me... But thank you for so assuming.
