I never really rebelled against my parents ever. I see no point in it at all. I went through my teens in the 90's too. Unless you consider rebelling when I was 4 my mom tried to make me wear dresses but I always wore jeans, long sleeved shirts, and boots. |

I think it gets worse and worse. It wasn't even until the 50's that the word teenager became commonly used..I think before that, "teenagers" were treated as adults, expected to pull there own weight. As the middle class grew, we were allowed to treat teenagers as children for a longer period of time..now it seems young adults are rebelling well into there 20's. |

Also, parents allow there children to dress this way..I've been going through a struggle with my 13 year old over the age old question, should the belly be exposed or not exposed...NOT exposed has won the day because every shirt she owns that can be hiked up has been taken away from her. |

Kelly, THAT is what I call GREAT parenting. Why would someone allow thier Child to go out into public dressed that way??? And SP I know that people will dress no matter what people say or think, but would you really want to be lumped into a category where people just assume you are trash??? And although I try not to judge a book by its' cover, it really can't helped if you carry yourself in a manner which is so... tasteless. |

I personally think the rising percent of single parents contributes allot to this. I think it’s just immature for someone to act like this. People just need to start treating older people with respect and respect authority and quit acting like that. |

WELLLLLLL, I have to admit that I question athority whenever it is neccesary. But not out of turn. HOWEVER I have noticed that there has been a LOT of disrespect for athority and that is juat a completely different thing. As for the single parents... Sorry Big Tex, but I know a lot of single parents with teenagers who sdo not act this way... |

Miss C, the threat of being force into wearing straight-leg jeans that rise well above her waste go along way to making her obey the no-belly exposed rule..As for single parenting, for all intents and purposes, I have been a single parent for the last 14 months, but that doesn't mean I will let my daughter dress like a tramp! It helps a lot that her school has gone to uniforms though...It is AMAZING what uniforms do for behaviour. Last year with NO dress code, the school had 175 infractions in the first two weeks. This year, also the first year for school uniforms, they had only 25 infractions in the first two weeks of school. |

i do think it's more out there now and it is a bit stronger.... 10 years ago no one would have thought abotu school shootings but now it's known... not common but it's not a thing that doesn't happen... i think there are MANY reasons for this.. single parents.. parents using divorce too freely... the higher number of teenage mothers.. parents are far more relaxed... 20 years ago you would never hear of a teenager doing 5-6-7-8 even parternity tests on different men not knowing who the father was.. sex.. is less taboo and in the main stream more and more now and we have become a very very open culture... i'm not saying an open culture is a bad thing... it's great for freedom of expression.. but alas it's finding what i call "the happy medium" where there isn't too much and isn't too little life and our culture in general has to find the happy medium |

Rebellion is an interesting topic. I think the reason for most teenage rebellion comes from the internal conflict they have with themselves. Alot of it comes from the opposition to western society, which is seen as bland. If it is worse, I think it is only because western culture is becoming more and more over powering myself. bob |

she was just expressing herself, it doesn't mean she's rebelling. maybe thats just how she wants to dress. i am a teenager and i don't think that you can say that EVERYTHING that teens do is rebeling. some teens realize that they are homosexuals...adults say its just a phase or jsut their way of rebeling. teens dress or act or think certain ways because they want to, but praents think they are just rebeling. its not always like that. TRUE, some teens DO do things just to rebel and go against their parents but its not a true statement to say that just because a teen is dressing in a way that seems weird to you that they are rebeling. but yes, her "no-no spots" as you called them should be covered up, just becuase its public decency. but that doesn't mean she's rebeling, she just has different ways of expressing herself |

Well... first of all, I think a lot of the hair dying etc, is simply for attention (not ALWAYS, but a lot of times!). Notice, those teens who don't like to bring attention to themselves, don't usually dye their hair bright pink, only those who like being in the spotlight. When you get to the make-up, the whole eye make-up thing is kind of a fad going on right now. What's wrong with fishnet stockings though? I love those! I need to buy a pair.... |

And might I say that "tasteless" is all relative.. This girl finds it appealing. I wouldn't, you don't, but she wouldn't be caught dead in your clothes or makeup, either. Being goth doesn't neccessarily mean you have a TASTEFUL lifestyle.. The majority of my friends are goth, not in a FADlike fashion, but goth.. and I know they have no taste... But I still love them and THEY ARE STILL PEOPLE UNDERNEATH all the layers of black clothing, under the white and pink makeup, beneath the leather boots and dungeons and dragons and all else that people stereotype them for, they are PEOPLE. Just like this "tasteless" girl you ran into... |

As a 16 year-old teenager, I can tell you that i rebel from time to time...though that is not reflected upon the way I wear my clothes(at least i hope it doesn't); its really just the attitude problem( As I'm sure most parents know). I dress the way i want to, keeping in mind(somewhere back there) that I am representing the family and my upbringing...to an extent...not forgettting who i really am just to please someone else, so i won't go overboard. Sure i wear the black clothes sometimes and the rock t-shirts and have the dyed red(not too bright) hair...but i don't wear make-up..i JUST got my ears pierced(ow) and i really detest skimpy outfits. I'm just explaining how I am ..okay...so im not trying to insult anyone here or say that everyone is or should be like this..or anything like that. Also, whether or not the way i dress is tasteful varies from person to person. Some people may think its too rocker chick, too goth, cute, or something like that. Regarding the way us teenagers dress: WE CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE!! The way we dress expresses our individuality. I guess you can say the way i dress is along the lines of a "punk rocker", even though i don't take it the level that i would like (its not an EXREME level mind you) because i keep in mind as i said before, who i'm representing: Mostly me and who i am, but also my parents. I really try not to judge others like sometimes people judge me by the way i dress sometimes. I don't dress the way you want me to, i dress the way i want to without degrading myself. So i guess I'm saying that not all teenagers rebel through the way they dress...they are just representing who they are..whether its "good" or "bad" representation in peoples opinions. Still, I keep that in mind all of what i've said when i open my closet and decide what to wear... <-DevilsRoad-> |
