The heater kicked warm air that mingled with the music, both teaming up to caress Aaron's neck, head, face, ears...
The white ribbon of road jumped beyond his eyelids as they fluttered.
"No man. Gotta stay awake." He looked at the still form of the young woman beside him. Her head looked straight ahead, but through the dim of the car, he could not tell if she slept. He patted her shoulder. "Hey. I gotta talk to somebody, or we might end up IN Lake Tahoe."
Her head turned slightly. "Don't feel like it."
"Kay. You don't have to if you're that tired."
"Ain't tired." She sqirmed to sit up. "Gotta get a new life. And now I'm set."
"How so?"
"The creep is gone. I hope."
Silence as the two watched the yellow beams of light slice the snow-studded night.
"He almost got me this time. But now I'm set."
"Yea?"
"Should have known. Once a nutcase, always a nutcase."
"What did he do?"
"Don't matter. Kay?" She turned to him.
"Yea, yea. No problem."
"He's insane, that's all. But it don't matter no more. Cause I got away with his 15,000."
"His what?"
"His money. He had it all in cash in the house. Told you, he's crazy."
I think you both might be, Aaron thought.
"He don't believe in banks, so he kept his money in bundles all over the house. Probably more than 15 grand, but that's what I could find. Found it when he was still institutionalized. Didn't DARE touch it then. After he attacked me tonight and I knocked him out, I knew I gotta split, so I scraped up all the green I could, then hit the road. I sat and counted it a couple hundred yards down the road, then sat to think of what to do next, when you came by."
Aaron looked in his rearview mirror, swallowing hard. "So, uh, you think he could follow your footsteps in the snow?"
"Oh yea! That's why I'm grateful you came along."
"Can he drive?"
"Not supposed to. But he will."
Aaron looked in his rearview again. Blackness. He looked in his side view. Just red from the tail lights with white flakes. He faced the road again, gripping the steering wheel harder, noticing sweat on his palms.
***Well, can anyone else jump in to keep this alive? Snipit, don't know if you envisioned your starter going this route, but I hope it's cool:)
