The Most Dangerous Game 2.....AerisVampire

There was a sound of barking dogs in the distance, and like thunder it neared. Rainsford’s wiped his hands on his pants from the sweat that had condensed between his fingers. He heard the rustle of leaves nearby, and pressed himself against the trunk of the closest tree. He lifted his hands to say a prayer, when he noticed how violently his hands trembled and how damp sweaty palms made his shirt cuffs. But his sleeves made no difference to him. This was a matter of life and death, not wet and dry. His grip around the gun tightened, and he braced himself for anything as he peeked around the tree…only to come face-to-face – and gun-to-gun – with Zaroff.

“You did a good job of avoiding me, Rainsford,” the general said. “But not good enough.”

Rainsford felt Zaroff push the gun closer to his heart, readying for a shot as he saw the balmy wind paint a smile across Zaroff’s face. Instead it was Rainsford who pulled the trigger. Zaroff’s body stood lifeless for a moment, then his knees buckled, and he fell limp and bloodied, face-first, to the ground.

A look of disgust crossed Rainsford’s face as he kicked the body to face the heavens. The expression Zaroff held was a perfect specimen of surprised terror; eyes wide open, nostrils flared, and mouth opened slightly for a last-minute gasp that would never make it to his lungs.

“I guess you didn’t do such a great job avoiding me, eh?” said Rainsford. He gave a crazed smirk, and turned to leave.

The dogs had ceased their barking as they approached. The first few sat whining, and licking their master’s unforgiving hand with adoration Rainsford never thought they had. However, they didn’t matter to him. It was the tint of blue on Zaroff’s lips that brought a smile to Rainsford’s.

Wow, thanks if you've even gotten this far!!!! *HUGS* AerisVampire

Date: 10/12/2002 11:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 5940    I have never read this story, TMDG. But for what it's worth, your version is interesting indeed. You mentioned that you are doing this for a school assignment, and I am guessing from the first part that this is the version you wrote? I think you did well.
