(((((((NOTE: this was an assignment for English. We read the short story "The Most Dangerous Game" and had to change it a bit, either change the ending or add onto it. I decided to TWEAK it. The first 3 sentences are the original author's (Richard Connell's) work, the rest is mine. Just so there's no plagiarism accused. If you haven't read TMDG, its generally about a man (Zaroff) who is tired of hunting animals, so his new game is human. The main character (Rainsford) is stranded on Zaroff's private island, and Zaroff challenges Rainsford who is a fellow hunter to a game of manhunt... in which they hunt each other. I have begun at the part where Rainsford is hidden in a tree and along the path comes no other but Zaroff.. I will be posting in two parts. I just wanna see what USM thinks about MY verison. Thank you SO MUCH.>>>
Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. And rightly so. The sharp eyes of the hunter spied him in the tree, and a smile spread across his face. Zaroff’s hand fell to his gun, but Rainsford was quicker. With lightning speed, he fired a shot at Zaroff, who replied with a round himself. And thus began the pursuit.
Bullets followed Rainsford like a stunt double for Zaroff as he dove from his perch into a pool of muddy water below. Between a splash landing and a frantic escape, Rainsford stumbled over tangled tree roots and the unfortunate corpse of a fellow hunted man. He felt his stomach churn and convulse, but soon forgot all about sickness when a bullet struck the tree just ahead of him.
Then the island became silent, and the scent of doom tainted the air. Zaroff had stopped to reload, Rainsford told himself. And perhaps to also sneak up on him.
He crawled through the pools of rainwater and muck, through the dew-dazzled underbrush and creeping mist, to a secluded cove of rocks surrounded by palm trees. Rainsford pressed his back against the stones and sank to the ground. He gave a sigh as he caught his breath and reloaded his gun. He gave his cove one last look around before he made his way out into the trees yet again, when he felt a tickle in his nose. His face stretched and compressed into twisted expressions in a futile attempt to restrain himself from giving away his position. Alas, gunfire ensued from behind as Rainsford let out an echoing sneeze.
Rainsford fled across the island, and the general followed. The two men held their fire, Rainsford panicking and Zaroff plotting. Victory was imperative, and failure was expensive. One false move, Rainsford told himself, and he was out of the game.
Rainsford paused to hide behind a palm. He repeated to himself to keep his nerve, but at a time of great crisis and fear, what power could he still hold over himself? And what was he to think when that sinister little voice crept into his head? It was Zaroff’s; he knew it… that malicious whisper that tritely growled, “Bless you.”
