Smells Like Teen Spirit is based on many poems Kurt wrote through his life. Basically it's about how ridiculously shallow most Teenagers and Adults are for that matter. "Load up on guns, bring your friends, party, blah blah* What is contangious? The simplicity of shallowness, of consumer driven lives....what is contangious? Falling into commerical sex drives, and romantic comedies. So many teens have a beast within them that is capable of changing everyone around them and challenging the system, but most of them give that up for a "good time partying and having sex" That's my take on it, but we won't know because the guy decided to kill himself. So interpret anyway you want because he won't be able to tell you your wrong. |

Kurt mostlikely always took the easy way out when it came to explaining his music, because he knew anything he said would be criticized and misinterpreted, besides every artist knows it's best to let each person take what they want from the song, because they will do it regardless. |

My brother actually have the lyrics printed out somewhere. I've been listening to this song all day though. The only things I can understand are "Hello Hello Hello He** No", "Here we are now, entertain us" and the one line I know for sure which is "I know, I know a dirty word." As for actual meaning, I don't think they have one in particualar. Great song though, I love it! Erin- |

Kathleen Hannna from Bikini klill spray painted the words "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall one night in drunken revelry with Dave Grohl. Kurt's lover at the time, Tobi Vail from the same band used "Teen Spirit" deoderant, and he simply liked the way that it sounded. He also liked the idea of being "marked" by her scent. Basically the song is a rant about about several things, his anger at his parents, his continuous boredome and his eternal cynicism. Many lines also , admittedly from Kurt, came from the influence of his girlfriend at the time. The first version of the song, had a line that was cut from the first song "who will be the king and queen of the outcast teens?" whcih referred to he and her and their influence on the Seattle music scene. Also the line "she's over bored and self assured" relates to her as well. The magic of all of Nirvana's songs, however is how deeply personal they were of Kurt and how he allowed himself to be disected in lyrics. "Teen Spirit" was the last song written for the album, as, one of Nirvana's least favorite to play. They actually only played it for a short period of time live, as it was almost resented by them as being the song that dragged them kicking and screaming from out of the underground. It is a great song, but there are so many that are so much better, and unfortunately, this is the one that is most readily identified with them. No meaning for the song is really "wrong"..it is just poetry for the listener to make of it what they want. |
