I was sitting at my desk eating my bagel and surfing the Internet like I had always been there. Of course I knew he would now bug me but eh what could I do? In about 5 minutes (actually seconds) he started tapping on the door. At first I pretended I didn’t notice him but he was a persistent one! I pretended I just noticed him and walked up to the door and started to unlock it and open it. He looked a little confused and I said innocently, “Oh I’m sorry I didn’t see you. Can I help you?” He looked at me a little funny and said, “I was just looking for you. I thought all of the secretaries went out to lunch.” “They did but I stayed here because I didn’t want to go anywhere for lunch. I just turned off the lights so I wouldn’t have to do any work.” He looked a little happier. I think he may have picked up on the clue I was shy but at that instant forgot I had been trying to avoid him! He said, “Well if you haven’t had lunch yet then maybe you would like to go with me.” He sounded hopeful. If those dreams were right I would have to eventually give in! I just walked over to my desk and said, “Sorry I already ate by myself.” He just got this look on his face like ‘God give me a chance I’m doing my best.’ So I think he made a little mental note to make his attempts harder. He walked up to my desk and said, “Hey I’m still having a little trouble with that contract. Maybe you could help me. Do you know anything about law or anything?” He sat in the chair in front of my desk and seemed to make himself comfortable. Having not much of a choice I said, “Yeah I studied law in college. Alls I can say is here’s the low down of what Bill is going to do to you. First you will be his puppet. He will dress, name, give you religion, whatever to you. He will make you do anything he wants. You will have no legal rights what so ever. Good luck to you. Heck even if you had a girl friend he wouldn’t let you. By law after signing it he has you body and soul. Kind of like a slave.” I had been typing an email and trying to watch the screen as I said this. He said, “You studied law? Then why are you working here?” A heavy sigh came over me. “I was in college. I studied law. The people had so harassed me that I dropped out. So since this was my internship I just kept it as a job and now 3 years later here I am.” He kind of had a pity look in his eyes and said, “So you never quit college because of what people said?” I just shook my head. I’d always pretended to be tough and pretend I didn’t care what people thought but inside it really did get to me and now some guy comes along and unlocks my secret hurt! Nothing was more annoying and embarrassing! He just said, “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have asked. Well I can’t see why people would treat you bad if that helps.” I knew he was trying to smile at me. I wasn’t going to give him the time of day. I decided I had had enough of this game and said, “Yeah well I didn’t feel good this morning but Bill still made me come in and I don’t feel good now. So if you would just tell him or one of the other secretaries I went home I would appreciate it.” I got up and walked out of the office. I started walking real fast but I could hear him running trying to catch up with me. I thankfully got in an elevator and he wasn’t able to follow. The ride home was never ending. Thoughts kept running through my head. What was wrong with him? Why did he have a crush on me? Or maybe I was just taking it wrong. I had no clue because I had never had a friend or crush in all my life. I was in the middle of driving when all of a sudden I faded out.
