Am I the only one that understands ADD???!!!!!!??!!!!!

  Author:  36079  Category:(Debate) Created:(10/12/2001 8:12:00 PM)

I have seen this issue so sterotyped and misinformed. It seems as though the magority thinks of this disability as just a personality quirck, or just a learning disability. In the words of my father inlaw, it doesn't affect your life, only in school. uhh heh heh grr I mean it is so hard to tell people hey I don't mean to be this way, it is from a disabilty. Then some people think, well I have been diagnosed with ADD but it doesn't do this or that to me. People have got to know that there are many parts to ADD and not everyone has all the same things. Some people have a messy desk, some people can't seem to focus on there work, others can't remember what they did 5 minutes ago. These are all symptoms of ADD.

Ok one thing that bugs me is that I am a horrible worker, I mean if you were to higher me you would have to have the utmost patience. I can't tell an employer this, I will never get a job. I can't keep my thoughts straight, if abcdefg was the unspoken way I should do things, it is too hard to keep my thoughts straight to remember this, I'm constantly getting distracted, say if... I was asked to do something, I would get side tracked, and would forget what I was supposed to do in the first place, and not even remember till my boss asked me about it 20 mins later. If something is a no no, I would constantly forget, and make the same mistake over and over again. I mean, I could littereally not only have all of this stuff happen to me everyday, but a few times a day.

The worst part about it is that when alot of people see me doing this, they think that it has nothing to do with my disorder, that I'm slow, lazy, stupid, or just plain don't care about my job or whatever I'm doing. That is so hurtfull. Although I took twice as long as others in school, I got As and Bs, I scored above average in IQ tests, I have been said to be a devoted worker, in little stress situations. Just becouse I don't have certian peoples symptoms, or my symptoms aren't stereotypical, don't just bash it. Is there anyone else here that understands? Is there any of those, its all in your head people?

Date: 10/12/2001 8:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    I understand it because I live with a child that has ADHD...people have no clue until it hits home to them....they are gret at dishing out what they "think" you should do and even better at pointing out what they think they are not doing....but know one knows unless they have a walked a mile in your shoes!!!
Date: 10/12/2001 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 43941    omg! i have ADD too! i have got the same problems as you do, so i totally understand how you feel. and i thought i was the only one! they say you outgrow ADD but im almost 23 and i still have problems related to ADD. *eriksgirl21*
Date: 10/12/2001 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 33803    I totally understand it. My sister and my boyfriend have it. I don't mind it at all. It's not their fault. I love them anyway! ;)
Date: 10/12/2001 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 37354    I am one of those it is all in your head people. Hugo
Date: 10/12/2001 8:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    eriks girl, how do you handle it? I mean stereo types, and the disability, I have been larglly unsuccessful with dealing with this, it's so bad I'am scared out of my wits of getting a job, cuz I know what I'm in store for as far as being looked down upon, and looking at me as though I'm stupid. Hugo, I think azaryia said it all. I like the way you summed that up AZ. The shame of it all is still really hard even though I know its not my fualt. Thanx for your comments, Love, Poo
Date: 10/12/2001 8:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    off the subject, I'm eligible for a tag, I have seen some of the work radman has done and would like to ask him if he would do mine, does anyone know his user id or something? thanx a bunch
Date: 10/12/2001 9:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 16865    Hey, I am 26 years old and I have ADD, ODD, and dislexia (and more). It's hard at times but I do have good days. I sometimes want to just drug myself with ritalin and just be "normal" but dang that would get boring. I have to be myself. And for those that think it doesn't exsist, well, you can't prove something that isn't tangible so don't try, just grin ear to ear and say "I'm sorry you feel that way" that always annoys them :) Just take it easy. You'll get the hang of things. And if you saw my house, YIKES! I have to live on a schedule or I forget what day it is, what time it is, how much time has elapsed, what I was supposed to be doing, where the notebook is that I made a list in to help me remember, etc etc and I am quite bright IQ wise. Above average. My organization is lacking though. But that comes with the terrotory. Be glad to be you!
Date: 10/12/2001 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 43941    i ignore those stereo-types, and as far as getting a job, i have never told my emploeyer i had ADD. you dont have to tell them, but if you do, and they look down upon you because of ADD, that is discremination. and it is against the law. but as far as my concentration, i have to work on it. i always start something, get sidetracked, and forget what i was doing, and half the stuff i start never gets done. you just have to have the will power to concentrate. just pretend like you like what you are doing, kind of like playing a trick on your mind, trick your self into thinking, "i like what im doing and im not stopping till im finished" train yourself to do that. its tough sometimes, but you'll get through it! *eriksgirl21*
Date: 10/12/2001 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 43941    i know what it feel like to have peolpe think you are just stupid and lazy. we arent stupid, it just takes us longer to figure things out than it does others. i didnt have any problems untill i quite taking my meds though. i had to stop taking them cause they were causing me more problems than the ADD itself was,<~~another story!! *eriksgirl21*
Date: 10/12/2001 9:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 277    I don't understand. A lot of people would call that alzeimers disease. Many would call it being forgetfull. Add= Attention Deficit Disorder.....not disorganized-messy desk or forgetting what you're supposed to be doing. Sorry...My nephew has ADHD (supposedly) and it's not like that at all.
Date: 10/12/2001 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 21673    you take meds? My son has it. I understand. Interestingly I have worked for a Boss that has it for many years now. He has to work very hard at focusing. Hes a "classic" case. I like him and understand him. But hes been very successful in his career if one overlooks his quirks. And yes he sent thru that messy desk syndrome. Hang in there, it changes as you do!
Date: 10/12/2001 9:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 43941    ok, hawk, how come ever comment you make is rude, its not our fault your messed up. and attention deficit disorder is exactly what is say. it means you have a hard time paying attention, and concentrating on something for long periods of time. maybe you need to research more hawk. we have the freaking disease, i think we should know what its all about! i was diagnosed when i was 3 so, i have had it for quiet some time now. *e.g.*
Date: 10/12/2001 10:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 277    Author 43941, These are my opinions and I am entitled to them. I do not think they are rude, just honest. Take them as you wish. Yes, most 3 year olds have long attention spans. (*sarcasm*)
Date: 10/13/2001 1:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 12637    In less than 60 years we went from a society that relied on Plays and Literature as a source of entertainment. To a TV Society, where a person can easily be bombarded with a 1000 images in one commerical break....That alone can cause the sociological adjustments and evolution referred to as ADD. Think about it....the TV may be second nature to us, but it is a new invention, and biology is starting to adjust to technology.
Date: 10/13/2001 1:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 31275    My sister is like that. I understand what you are going through. She has trouble concentrating on tasks. Medicine helps but somethings it can't fix. It's almost like she's daydreaming all day. PAI
Date: 10/13/2001 4:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 22852    I understand. I know I have ADD but when I was younger they never did tests for it. I always though I was crazy or stupid. I know better now. My son have ADD and after much work we finally gave him Ritalin during school hours only and it truely works well for him. And NO it does not turn him into a drug looking state. He really needs it and it works wonders for him. It doesn't change his personality either, it just helps him to concentrate on the subjects at hand and not get distracted. Good Post @}---
Date: 10/13/2001 7:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 16061    I have never had it or know anyone who has had it but I am sure its very hard to live with. But in part it is due to todays society we can now have 100 channels and flick through easily our own DVD's Videos, radio station etc.
Date: 10/13/2001 10:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 4614    I think ADD is a crock...At times for bad parenting, at other times an excuse for a skill a person lacks...I know plenty of people who are forgetful, messy, etc etc...But that's just them, they shouldn't be given drugs for it...
Date: 10/13/2001 11:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 277    I agree with sundance.
Date: 10/13/2001 1:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    Well I'll tell you one thing, my house drives me crazy!!! It is so hard to keep track of especially with my 2 year old. My house is not me. Even talking, if I will get distracted all the time while talking, then forget what I'm saying. Some times I'm talking and its like, if I don't talk fast enough I know I'm gonna forget what I want to say. I'm not irresponsible or lazy, I just have a disorder that is very hard to control. Even with meds, me4ds help, but it is like speed, my heart races, and I go like crazy, it helps to get stuff done, but I don't like that feeling speed gives you. Also coming down off the medication is hard as well, its like getting bombarded with a milloin thoughts at once and not having a direction or priorty as to anything I'm thinking. Thats the reason I basically quit it. On top of dry mouth, and the constant need to do something.
Date: 10/13/2001 1:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    Hawk, I also mentioned, how not all people have the same symptoms of this disability. ADHD has alot of things different to just ADD. It kindas like becouse of there hyperness, they can't stay focused. There hyperness is also at the same time not there fualt. There are also varying degrees of this disabilty, some have it worse than others, you shouldn't judge just by another persons symptoms.
Date: 10/13/2001 1:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    I don't know what the TV thing is about. But how come if I work my truelly hardest, and I still can't keep up with what the next person is doing with no effort? Cmon, this can't be just me.
Date: 10/13/2001 3:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 34814    I have dyslexia and ADD I know!!! It has gotten better through the years HUGS
Date: 10/13/2001 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 16865    It's not just you! I watch little to no TV and when I was growing up, no TV. So that blows that theory LOL Feel better???
Date: 10/16/2001 2:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 21862    I Believe that yes people can have ADD but you can only really say one does until the reach adult age because a lot of these kids who supposively have it just have way to much suger in there diets, I know people who let there kids have tons of pop (not saying pop is bad but when you see a kid drink like 5 cans a day like my sisters kids thats a little too much) and eat sweets all day well yay there gonna act like this and I think that this is what gives ADD a bad name, Because there are people out there who truly have it and are being looked as what you said above because of the ones who use it as an excuse.
Date: 10/16/2001 7:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36079    what you are saying sounds like adhd. For one thing they have said for years now that sugar doesn't make a kid hyper, thats just a myth, I'm in no way condoning junk food though. My kid is hyper, but I rarly have anything other than fuit with sugar in it. When I do give him sweets he is just the same, just a little more spoiled, lol. Yes it seems like a lot of docs are saying all these kids have add or adhd, but I'm in no school classroom, I couldn't tell you that happens. I think its a lil over exagerated. But I do thing they are over medicating kids, the long term side affects of these drugs have never even be tested. I mean they give kids lithium, that has been known to cuase sterility. but Its morning for me and I'm rammbling, see ya later, Love, Poo
Date: 10/16/2001 1:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 16069    Thank you for shaaring this with us. I didnt know much about ADD til I read this. People that really care about you will take the time to understand.
